Here’s a Kidney-Friendly BBQ Sauce recipe created by our registered dietitian Bethany Keith. This version is very low in sodium and potassium with only 12 mg of sodium and 86 mg of potassium per 2 tablespoon serving.
It’s so delicious you won’t miss out on any flavor! You can use this sauce as a condiment, marinade, or in your favorite baked beans recipe.
Kidney-Friendly BBQ Sauce (Makes 12 servings, 2 tbsp each)
1 cup no salt added tomato sauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp each black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, and ground mustard
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tbsp molasses
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup water
Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to avoid burning. Let sauce cool.
It will continue to thicken as it cools.
